SarahJane Rehnborg, PhD, CVA, Interim Director with the RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service and Lecturer at the LBJ School, received her undergraduate degree from Denison University and her Master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. A faculty member in the graduate Nonprofit Management Portfolio program, Rehnborg teaches courses in the area of nonprofit governance, community engagement and volunteer management. She is actively involved in the RGK Center’s Executive Education Programs. Her research agenda includes nonprofit organizational assessment and capacity building in community engagement and nonprofit performance assessment. Most recently, Rehnborg has been asked to serve as the faculty advisor to the UT undergraduate Service Scholar’s Program, an experience that combines intensive volunteer engagement with focused reflection. Additionally, she was recently appointed to the Reimagining Service Council to explore the future of volunteerism.
Prior to joining the RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service, Rehnborg was Director of Community Engagement for the Charles A. Dana Center at UT Austin. She has written numerous articles and documents in the field and is the author of "Starter Kit for Mobilizing Ministry," published by the Leadership Network, and "Volunteer Youth Training and Leadership," a comprehensive high school curriculum in service and volunteerism that was later adopted by the state of Maryland.
Rehnborg brings extensive practical experience to her research and course work. A Certified Volunteer Administrator, she established a program of volunteerism and community education at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh; the Institute for Volunteerism at the Community College of Allegheny County; and was Associate Administrator of Human Resources at Pittsburgh's John J. Kane Hospital, a 1200 bed extended care facility. Rehnborg developed the competency-based certification program for the Association for Volunteer Administration and served as President of its Board of the Directors. She has served as a consultant or advisor to the United Nation’s North American Regional Consultation Meeting on the State of the World’s Volunteerism; Hand’s On Network’s Advanced Summit on Volunteer Administration; The Points of Light Foundation; the Texas Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service; the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation and others. For the Comptroller's Office of the State of Texas, where she participated in the state performance review system examining the role of citizen participation in state government.
